Kosovo delegation, yesterday, had bilateral meetings with EU representatives led by Ana-Maria Boura.

The meeting between the Kosovo delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister Edita Tahiri and consisting of Mimoza Ahmetaj, Kosovo’s ambassador to Brussels and Besnik Osmani, Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and EU representatives focused on implementation of Brussels Agreement in harmony with Kosovo laws on the issue of inauguration and functioning of new municipal authority, particularly in the four municipalities in the northern part of Kosovo.

After the meeting, Tahiri said the “meeting with EU representatives today was important”.

“We received assurances that the EU strongly supports respect of Kosovo laws by the new municipal authorities in the inauguration process as well as in their further functioning”, said Tahiri.

On their part, EU representatives, according to a statement issued from the Prime Minister’s Office, said that “Brussels Agreement is clear and is based on Kosovo laws and therefore as elections took place with Kosovo laws, so should the inauguration and functioning be in full accordance to them”.

“The EU also announced it is in continuous contact with mayors of these municipalities and in the afternoon they had a meeting with a delegation from the municipalities led by Zveçan mayor to whom the EU expressed clear position that new municipal structures should respect Kosovo laws during their inauguration and constitution”, the statement reads on.

At the same time, Kosovo delegation in the meeting with EU states that “Government of Kosovo is maximally committed to the process of constitution and functioning of new municipalities is concluded across Kosovo in accordance to the law and the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo”.

While expressing appreciation once again for the valuable contribution the EU has and is providing for local institutions, the Kosovo delegation hailed the EU’s clear stance in support of Kosovo laws and requested it continued until the process is concluded.

Further, the delegation informed the EU that if Kosovo laws are not upheld by any elected mayor or municipal assembly members, “the Government of the Republic of Kosovo will undertake adequate legal measures by declaring them illegal”.

Meetings with EU will continue today to close this process in harmony with Kosovo laws and Brussels Agreement.
