Orthodox church at UP campus to be treated as special case (Koha)

The Orthodox Church on the campus of the University of Pristina (UP) will not be listed for demolition, even though no one has applied for its registration.  Although municipal officials earlier had declared that the church "Christ the Saviour", built in the 90s, will be treated as all other facilities without permission, on the grounds that it is politically sensitive case, now appears it takes time for making a decision.

Opposition to boycott today’s Assembly session (Koha)

Opposition parties – Vetevendosje, Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) and Initiative for Kosovo (NISMA) – announced they will boycott today’s special session of the Assembly called to mark the Peace Day. Opposition parties said their decision was taken after heads of parliamentary groups were not granted permission to take the floor and address the MPs on the occasion. Instead, only Assembly Speaker Kadri Veseli is expected to speak at the session.

AKJ reacts to yesterday's attack against journalists (Koha)

The Association of Kosovo Journalists (AKJ) reacted to yesterday's attack on photojournalists of Koha Ditore and Indeksonline by a Kosovo Police officer in Mitrovica. “On behalf of the journalists, AKJ reminds the KP that it is unacceptable to attack and prevent journalists in carrying out their duties.  Institutions are called upon to create safe conditions for journalists, not to hinder the independent exercise of their profession. Any attempt to block their work, means violating the freedom of speech,” read the press release issued by the AKJ.

No one has applied for legalization of Orthodox Church building in Pristina (Koha)

The Serb Orthodox Church “St. Nicholas” built within the University of Prishtina campus has not applied for legalization, confirmed Pristina Municipality spokesperson Miranda Mullafazliu-Bejta. She added that all buildings that do not possess a construction permit and have not applied for one within the given timeframe will not be able to be reviewed and will be subject to demolition. However, Mullafazliu-Bejta did not say whether the Orthodox Church building will have the same fate.

Journalists in Kosovo, threatened and unprotected (Koha)

Only 52 percent of journalists are completely certain that the Kosovo Constitution guarantees them the right of expression, concluded the report “Media Index 2015” drafted by “Kosovo 2.0”, “Cohu” and the Kosovo Press Media Council. The study interviewed 175 journalists and identified 27 indicators used for assessing the freedom of expression, information and the freedom of the media in Kosovo. The study claims that 86 percent of journalists strongly believe that there are individuals linked directly or indirectly to political parties who also control the media.

Kosovo participating at the “Brdo-Brioni Process” (Koha)

The President of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga, is participating at the meeting of the regional presidents, “Brdo-Brioni Process.”

 Jahjaga posted a picture prior to this meeting, where the President of Austria, Fischer, is invited as a special guest, in order to intensify the relations of the region with the European Union.

 Enlargement of the European Union, infrastructural projects and energy, are the key issues to be discussed at this year’s meeting of the “Brdo-Brioni Process.”

Jahjaga: Kosovo women are successfully challenging barriers (Koha)

Kosovo’s President, Atifete Jahjaga, participated and spoke today on the occasion of the launch of the Network of Professional Women "Leadership and Growth Council". This event was also attended by representatives of the international presence in Kosovo. “What we're seeing very clearly today in your midst, it is a serious initiative aimed at equal treatment of women in society. Initiative which should become our common mission of every citizen and in every part of our institutions. You are women who have broken barriers, but your strength goes beyond that.

Kosovo aims to become part of the World Health Organization (Koha)

The first regional Conference for Education and Health Promotion was held today in Pristina, where it was said that the importance of health promotion is key to Kosovo institutions. The conference was attended by representatives of regional countries.  Prime Minister Isa Mustafa said that health is very important and together with economic development and education are the priorities of the government program.  He said that Kosovo aims to become part of the World Health Organisation.
