UN ‘Must Compensate All Kosovo Lead Poison Victims’ (Balkan Insight)

The UN’s failure to compensate victims of lead poisoning at UN-run camps for people displaced by the Kosovo war left families struggling to care for sick relatives, says a Human Rights Watch report.

In a new report published on Thursday, Human Rights Watch calls on the United Nations to pay individual compensation to Kosovo Roma victims affected by lead contamination in the UN-run camps for war-displaced people in Kosovo.

UN Warns Kosovo That Political Stalemate Is Harming Economy, Social Opportunities

The United Nations says the failure by Kosovo lawmakers to form a government more than two months after elections is causing the country to miss out on "important" economic and social opportunities.

The head of the UN mission in Kosovo, Zahir Tanin, said on August 16 that the deadlock sparked by an inconclusive June 11 snap election has caused the cancellation or deferral of financial aid and investment in the country, according to RFE/RL.

Guterres: No progress in Belgrade-Pristina dialogue (Kosovapress)

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, said Belgrade-Pristina dialogue is facing serious challenges and that no sufficient progress has been made, including with regards to the establishment of Association/Community of Serb-majority municipalities. He also called on the two parties to revive the process. UN SG made the remarks in his regular quarterly report on activities of UNMIK and the situation in Kosovo, covering the period between 16 April and 15 July.

Serbia can't do much about Kosovo now, and should wait (Sputnik, B92)

At this point, Serbia could only accept Kosovo's independence, which would allow it to join NATO and the UN. That's why it should perhaps wait, analysts have told Sputnik.

Dialogue and discussion about the solution of the Kosovo and Metohija issue is needed. The only question is the approach to this problem. The state can only gain from the passing of time, analysts say.

RTS and other Serbian media reported about the conference on missing persons in Geneva. More than 6.000 persons went missing during the conflict in Kosovo in 1998 and 1999, and out of this number 1.658 are still listed as missing, participants at the roundtable discussion held in Geneva on 29th and 30th June stated.

UN chief: US will be replaced if it disengages from world (AP)

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned the Trump administration on Tuesday that if the United States disengages from many issues confronting the international community it will be replaced — and that won’t be good for America or for the world.

Guterres made clear to reporters at his first press conference here since taking the reins of the United Nations on Jan. 1 that proposed cuts in U.S. funding for the U.N. would be disastrous and create “an unsolvable problem to the management of the U.N.”
