Opposition leaders: Starting from today we will protest day and night (media)

The three leaders of the opposition bloc, Vetevendosje’s Visar Ymeri, the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) leader Ramush Haradinaj and Initiative for Kosovo (NISMA) leader Fatmir Limaj told reporters in Pristina today that starting at 14:00 the opposition will begin its non-stop protest against the government. Ymeri said: “Today we are starting our non-stop protest against this anti-constitutional regime. The protest will go on until the downfall of this government”.

According to the news site, the three opposition parties – the Vetevendosje Movement, Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) and the Initiative for Kosovo (NISMA), are planning to set up tents on Pristina's main square in an attempt to prevent Hashim Thaci’s election as President of Kosovo. Unnamed sources told the news site that protesters will stay on the main square until 7 March, the last deadline for presidential elections after which the country would immediately have to hold early elections.

Haradinaj: Early elections are the solution (Koha)

Ramush Haradinaj, leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), made another public call today for early parliamentary elections as a solution to the current crisis. “The government cannot pretend as if nothing happened and continue to improvise and to defend its positions, because this is no longer possible. The leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), Ramush Haradinaj, issued a statement following yesterday’s opposition protest calling on the people of Kosovo to join the efforts for change. Haradinaj said the protest conveyed several messages with the first and foremost being that the people of Kosovo will no longer tolerate violation of the Constitution and the undermining of the territorial integrity, bad governance, nepotism, corruption and institutional irresponsibility. “Today is the time to make a difference,” said Haradinaj.

The Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) said in a press release that last night’s arrests of Vetevendosje spokesperson Frasher Krasniqi and the head of Vetevendosje parliamentary group Glauk Konjufca ahead of the opposition’s protest tomorrow demonstrate the strong link between the government and law enforcement authorities. The AAK said the timing of Krasniqi’s and Konufca’s arrest is no coincidence, particularly as it relates to allegations several years’ old.

The front page editorial of the paper says that yesterday’s meeting between party leaders at the office of the President did not offer anything new, instead, it only proved that the governing coalition has no intention to compromise with opposition, and that protests throughout Kosovo remain the only solution. According to Kosova Sot, the President failed to offer any interesting options either.

Thaci: Elections and the President according to the Constitution (Koha)

Kosovo’s Principal Deputy Prime Minister Hashim Thaci talked to reporters after today’s meeting between political and institutional leaders. Thaci said: “We have suggested that the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo [AAK] should be part of joint sessions and take part in the international committee on the border demarcation with Montenegro. However, the AAK leader was silent about our proposals and I don’t know how he will react in the future”. Thaci said the leaders did not discuss the election of the President of Kosovo.

Haradinaj: Dissolution of parliament is the only solution (RTK)

Ramush Haradinaj, leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), walked out of the meeting of political leaders called by Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga and attended by Prime Minister Isa Mustafa and Principal Deputy Prime Minister Hashim Thaci. Haradinaj told reporters that he had requested the dissolution of the Parliament and new parliamentary elections.
