Serbian Government: Peace, stability in Balkans must be preserved

Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić met today in Davos with US Vice President Joe Biden, with whom he spoke about relations between the two countries and the situation in the region.

Prime Minister Vučić informed the US Vice President about Serbia’s stance on regional stability and bringing armed troops to the north of Kosovo-Metohija.

Vice President Biden commended economic reforms implemented by the Serbian government and Prime Minister’s Vucic commitment to that process.

Vice President Joe Biden warned the Kosovar government Wednesday of the "cancer" of corruption, during his first visit to the Balkans since 2009.

"I'm here today to affirm the United States is going to continue to stand with the people of Kosovo on your journey to become a prosperous, peaceful and multi-ethnic democracy," he told reporters.

He underscored, though, the dangers of corruption — what he called "a cancer that eats at the fabric of every society where it exists. In short, it jeopardizes everything Kosovo hopes to achieve, hopes to become, hopes for its future."

The US Vice President has praised the independence of Kosovo during a political and personal visit to the Balkan country.

On a visit to Pristina, Joe Biden also pushed for ties to be mended with Belgrade.

“Your success is overwhelmingly in the interest of my country. Overwhelmingly,” Biden said. “For if you succeed, the region will succeed.”

Biden also urged Kosovo and Serbia to normalise relations, a condition for both countries to join the EU.

The leader of the Vetëvendosje movement, Visar Ymeri, wrote on his Facebook page that the U.S. Vice President Joe Biden will be meeting criminals wearing presidential and governmental suits. “We hope that this meeting of the U.S. Vice-President Biden with these Kosovar criminals wearing presidential and governmental suits will be different from the others. Mr. Biden is arriving amidst the PRONTO 2 affair, to meet some of the main protagonists of Mafia in Kosovo,” Ymeri wrote.

The leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) Ramush Haradinaj, spoke about the visit of the U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden to Kosovo. He did not see a problem on the fact that Biden would not meet the opposition parties. “The visit of the U.S. Vice-President, Joe Biden is an honor for Kosovo, while the Institutions of Kosovo are the discussing party. This visit is also an honor for the opposition,” Haradinaj said.
