MEP Tanja Fajon says she will continue to deal with Serbia in the new parliament.
"I expect to continue to deal with Serbia as chair of the Serbian-European Parliament Relations Committee," Fajon told Tanjug.
Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said yesterday, after the European Parliament elections, that he met President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic and assessed as interesting the idea of Serbia being a part of the EU, while opposing the idea of Turkey’s entry, reports Belgrade based daily Blic.
Salvini’s far-right League party won 33,8 per cent votes and will have the most European MEPs.
The EU-Serbia Stabilization and Association Parliamentary Committee’s 10th meeting in Strasbourg called for more rule of law, and media freedom in the country, the European Parliament said in a statement issued on Thursday, TV N1 reports. The statement says as follows:
David McAllister, the European Parliament (EP) Rapporteur for Serbia told Radio Free Europe (RFE) in an interview his delegation called on Pristina authorities to revoke the decision on the 100 percent import taxes on goods from Serbia to enable the Belgrade – Pristina dialogue to resume, the Beta news agency reported on Wednesday.
The European Parliament has adopted an amendment related to talks on possible border corrections.
Secretary general of the European Movement in Serbia, Suzana Grubjesic, told Tanjug agency that the amendment was adopted as part of the solution within the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, in order to try to "pull out" Brussels dialogue from the deadlock.
The foreign policy committee of the European Parliament tomorrow should adopt the text of the report on Serbia, which includes a compromise amendment on the possible correction of the borders between Serbia and Kosovo, reports Radio Television Serbia (RTS).
"Any agreement can only be accepted if it is mutually consistent and in line with the overall stability of the region and international law," the text of the agreed amendment states.
The European Union has to take a united stand on the Western Balks or others will shape its neighbourhood, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker warned on Wednesday.
“We must find unity when it comes to the Western Balkans – once and for all. Should we not, our immediate neighbourhood will be shaped by others,” he said in his state of the union address to the EP.
A parliamentary group in the European Parliament, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), welcomed the efforts of Belgrade and Pristina to establish a normalization of relations, but at the same time expressed concern about the possibility of border correction and the exchange of territories, reports regional broadcaster N1.
ALDE deputy group leader Guy Verhofstadt said reconciliation, peace and stability in the Western Balkans must remain a priority for all actors in the region.
Civic Initiative Freedom, Democracy, Justice, (GI SDO) deputy leader Ksenija Bozovic met with the European Parliament Rapporteur for Kosovo, Igor Soltes, and one of the topics discussed was Oliver Ivanovic murder investigation, Kontakt plus radio reported.
Bozovic said the meeting was short but constructive and her assessment is that Soltes is very well informed about political developments in Kosovo and all the issues Serbs are facing.
The freedom of the press the West Balkans is incomplete, the European Parliament's research service said in a report, Beta reported.
The states of the region have faced politicization, problems in the implementation of law and intimidation of journalists, together with growing self-censorship, the report said.
